Effective workplace design - DTCC

Comfort + Functionality + Aesthetics + Environmentally Friendly + Cost Effectiveness: together ensure a good design, leading to minimum compromises. Effective workplace strategies can help realize growth. DTCC is one such project done by Archinova that is an example of our design strategies and also the quality of the final product. We have aligned the space with how people work in DTCC to enhance the business productivity and help drive growth. Cushman & Wakefield have been our project managers and we like to extend our gratitude to them for working with us and also instrumental in guiding us on delivering the project in the stipulated time.

DTCC-The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) is a US post-trade financial services company providing clearing and settlement services to the financial markets.

This office for DTCC is setup in Chennai on an area of approximately 10000 sft and being a US based company, had very specific standards and requirements to be followed during the design process. The design and the completion of project were evaluated at every stage by their team in the US.

The basic requirement of cabins, meeting rooms, number of workstations, pantry, quite rooms, breakout areas, server rooms and their basic sizes were given by DTCC. The design brief from DTCC was to create an office on Clean Lines. As designers’ we wanted a simple layout, easy connectivity and subtle colors.

The site came with few constraints, the only major drawback being the height which was low, leaving a minimum height of 8ft after the ducting and false ceiling.

The basic idea was to leave the central area open and align the rooms towards the periphery thus all the cabins, discussion room, conference, ancillary areas and services etc. are situated on the periphery and the workstations are placed centrally. As one enters the office their eye is directed to the cabin entrances which are designed like an archway forming as the main design element.

The cabins were designed with a linear concept using laminate on 3 sides, with self-designed wallpaper fascia on the backdrop.

Meeting rooms follow the same linear concept of the cabins with laminate on 3 sides and wallpaper on one wall forming as the main feature.

DTCC required a multipurpose area that could serve as 4 different meeting rooms or as 1 big conference room/training room, the partitions and false ceiling were designed in such a way that they looked as one element when all the partitions are closed or when they are stacked away.

On the basis of the basic idea to leave the central portion of the office open we were opposed with columns. We then used the columns as design elements to break the continuity of the workstation area yet keeping the space visually connected. The reprography stations were placed around the columns, the ceiling of these columns was highlighted with laminate fascia and cove lighting forming as a focal point.

The word breakout itself suggests breaking free from the routine of the work space thus going on these grounds we choose to break away from the calm and soothing character of the work area to a vibrant and bold breakout zone yet connecting both the spaces and keeping their simplicity intact.

In the pantry area, the ceiling was designed as a continuation of the wall, strips of cove lighting continue down to the wall. The wall behind the pantry counter is cladded with stone forming as a feature wall.

In the overall design a few green concepts that have been used are like led lighting, recyclable carpets and workstations which have recyclable components. Consequently, DDTC has been designed around the concept of workability within a space. It has taken considerable amount of research to negotiate color patterns ensure a neutral atmosphere with bright lighting to promote certain liveliness to the workspace. Workstations that sit in the center of the room hold the office together, every aspect, from the carpeted floors to the diagrid ceilings, is designed to be highly efficient. Overall, the design elements ensure that the workspaces interiors of DDTC advocate for a healthful work ambience that uplifts the monotony and obscurity of an inefficiently designed office spaces.

Clearly DTCC is a project that is inscribed in the continuity of a workplace strategy that responds to the demand of both the design & functionality. After all, all of us have the added responsibility of identifying and creating awareness about sustainability and sustainable practices.
