The New Ancestral Home

This 30-year old house, owned by the wife’s parents, is filled with memories. This is how the design team works in close collaboration with the clients to preserve all those elements and things meaningful for her and yet create a modern living space for the young family.

The clients
This is home for a young couple who are practicing lawyers with 2 daughters. A cozy unit of a family, with a dream house in mind. There is enough of love and respect here to accommodate each others needs, preferences and choices. The male of the house is an introverted lawyer, but he is also gentle and soft spoken. He willingly agrees for pink to be the color of furniture settings, which his wife and daughters prefer. His choice means not only the respectfulness for his beloved family but also his change from a simple life to lively colorful life with the family.

The Design Concept
This is a house full of memories for the hostess who grew up and lived with her parents here. The 30 year old house with a mezzanine has a design style that is influenced by the religion of this family. The house was sedate and dark. Now with two little daughters they wanted the house to change to bright and vibrant.

The designers have cleverly achieved this using colorful window. The colorful window ornamented in the staircase is designed using beautiful colored glass like in a church. This window view provides a wonderful corner for the users to take a breath and think deeply.

In its original condition the house is equipped with sufficient rooms for the family. The designers made the first floor to be common areas, including a kitchen, a dining area, a living room and an indoor playground. The wide cement wall and the long dining table in front of it are the main areas for cooking and social activities. The second floor was designed to be the place for the main room and the kid’s room.

The lower layer used to be common areas. The overall adoption starts from black wood floors. Designers connect the open kitchen with a long dining table. By doing so, the users in the house can feel a sense of extensiveness. The main wall in the dining room is cement finish plus dyed veneer and painted glass, creating a multi-layer color change.

The upper layer is used as private areas, the master bedroom and the kids room. Lotus color is the main color in the master bedroom and pink is the dominant color in the kids bedroom. The final result is a house that cherishes the past memories and at the same time has a all new look.

Spatial Arrangements
Kitchen/Dining area: Because the wife’s sister lives near the house, the two families are accustomed to have a lunch together. Hence, kitchen is an important place for them to get closer to each other. The couple specializes in Chinese cuisine and Western desserts individually, the kitchen is designed a place to put two refrigerators to store a large amount of ingredients. Besides, a kitchen island connects the dining table so that the host can interact directly with guests.

Storage - There are enough places for storage in this house. Based on the demand of the wife to store their collection of cook books, the designer’s plans an entire wall of bookcase behind the TV wall.

Main Wall in the dining area
Considering the pillar, the designers tried to spilt the façade into several sizes, and adopt cement finished, veneer, and painted glass. The cement finished wall is the ground color of this house. Dyed veneer is used in order to create colorful main walls with various texture and colors.

The guest toilet and shower were hidden on the left side of the main wall, as well as were the kitchenware and fridge on the right side.

On this broad wall, they deliberately use some open squares as shown as the cabinets, making the overall picture balanced and vivid.

Wooden floorings:
The lower black wooden flooring presents the calmness of the host, and contrasts to the white wall. The higher wooden flooring is used to be the main theme of the space.

Colorful glass serves as a partition wall of a storage room. Natural light can be projected through the staircase and create a wonderful performance stage for light to make different image on the white wall and on the black staircase.

Beside the stairs is an indoor play area. The pillar was changed into a cabinet with two sides in which are stored the hostess’ collection of cups and the oven. Gray glass well projects the green view from outside the window.

Since the house is equipped with sufficient natural illumination, people in the house do not need to turn on the light in daytime. The designers choose a crystal chandelier in the master’s bedroom.

White is the main color on the wall. Black is the color of floorings.  From top to the bottom, the color is from light to dark.  Besides, pink furniture dots the space and vitalizes the house. On the second floor, each bedroom has theme settings of color configuration.
